Planning a trip

Here's a map of the coast south of us. We want to take 2 weeks and wander. The plan is to go to a certain number of places, see what's there, and then decide if we want to stay or move on. Here are some of the highlights of places we could see, but first click below for the map. It will open in a new tab and you can click back and forth.

Now, we've already been down to Hermosillo a couple of times, but we've never actually spent time there. Maybe on the way back, we're headed south first. First night we'll likely stop at Bahia Kino.

Then down to Los Mochis. Now this is interesting. The city itself doesn't have too much to see that we can find so far. But you can take a ferry to La Paz on the Baja, or take the Copper Canyon train trip. (Sorry, Wayne and Jen, we might have to do this the first time without you).

The train leaves at 0630 and arrives at 2030 in Chihuahua. We may stay in Chihuahua for a day or two then come back.

Guasave and Guamuchil are towns we haven't investigated yet. Cuilacan has a bad name, we'll probably give it a miss. But Cosola sounds like a charming little town, and there's a large cave nearby.

Mazatlan is a place I definitely want to hit. http://www.placesonline.com/north_america/mexico/sinaloa/mazatlan/travel_guide.asp

Then back from Mazatlan, hitting places like Topolobampo, Sinaloa and Huatabampo, Sonora. We have to start figuring out drive times now, and compiling a few maps from Google maps. We don't have time to buy a road atlas, which are few and far between here anyway.

  1. I've always wanted to take the Copper Canyon train!
We have a road atlas. It won't have new roads on it, but the old ones probably haven't changed.

  2. Huh! My computer says it's 6:30, but my comment posted at 5:30. How'd that happen?

  3. I dunno how that happened, I must have an incorrect time zone on the blog, I'll check it. We actually found a 2-year old map which should work just fine!

train ride is spectacular. I'm just sitting here drooling as I would like to go too. Enjoy.

  5. Wish you could come too, Shirl, my mom too. It's a 14-hour train trip, 6:30 to 8:30. That's a long time to be on a train!!

  6. Well yous guys can do all the leg work for the Copper Canyon if you must. I prefer to travel with experienced guides when possible anyway so make lots of notes. Fill up the Ford and hit the road. Sounds like you've been keeping the old bus pretty clean. We will be following with avid interest.

  7. OK, we'll make sure we know all about it. We're taking the train twice, so should have it pretty well figured out!

  8. You should be able to buy a Walmart Map Book in the Walmart in Obregon. If you take the toll road you can't miss it as it is on the right just after you should make a sharp left turn. ( Clear as mud huh!) But you can see the store on the right before you get to the turn.
